SKÖNA Design

News THE DARK SIDE
Skona THE DARK SIDE

Break away from the light and step into the dark! Although white and light grey kitchens tend to be the most popular…why not embrace the boldness of black? It’s sleek, chic, mysterious and creates a contemplative mood.

Combine black with other colours to add drama, polish and modernity. You would be surprised that it can make a kitchen look more spacious.

If all black cabinetry isn’t for you, remember that a little bit of black can go a long way. Up the cool factor with some ideas to incorporate this dark hue into your own kitchen design…

  1. Create a bi-color kitchen to split the difference. Make lower cabinets in matte black (to increase sense of space) and uppers in white or light wood (or vice versa) which will soften the overall effect of the deep dark hue.
  2. An alternative for black is dark graphite grey which reads as black but it’s not as intense.
  3. Black and white tiled backsplash looks freshby alternating horizontal rows of black and white subway tiles. Varying the width of the stripes makes the look more dynamic.
  4. Black floors + warm gray walls. Black stained wood floors and white cabinetry are warmed up by “greige” walls. Dark floors paired with a lighter coloured walls can make a room feel taller.
  5. Shiny black appliances + brass hardware. Black appliances and black sink are elevated with brass or satin gold faucets and hardware, which makes it stand out like jewelry.
  6. Black countertops + chocolate backsplash. Who says black and brown don’t go together? Au contraire, sleek black counters paired with glossy chocolate brown tiles make for a rich (and very European) combination.
  7. Black counters + black grout + white tile. Swap out light grout for dark makes a big impact…not to mention it’s easier to keep looking clean.
  8. Black cabinets + black trim + dark stained wood floors work best on a larger, open-plan space since an all-black palette can overwhelm a smaller kitchen.
  9. Black cabinets + white countertops are clean, classic and a perfect backdrop to add stylish lighting, chairs, stools and other décor accents.
  10. Black cabinets + pops of color. Sometimes what you put on your counters and shelves is just as important as the material they’re made of. Brightly hued accessories pop against jet-black counters and cabinets.
